The apps in this category are usually ranked by size, which is the least useful way to sort them. They serve different purposes, and the largest app is frequently the wrong one for what someone is actually looking for.

Sort by purpose instead

Three broad purposes, and most apps are built primarily for one:

Proximity and immediacy. Grid-based, location-led, oriented towards who is nearby now. Fast, direct, and the norms are correspondingly direct. Excellent at what it does and poor at what it does not.

Relationships. Profile-led rather than grid-led, with more structure around interests and intent, and a slower conversational pace. Smaller populations in most areas, which is the trade.

Care with app-visible metadata — a username reused from another platform is an identifier just as much as a photo is.

The approach that works

Pick the purpose. Install two apps that serve it. Check local density on both, on the same evening, with honest filters. Complete one profile properly rather than two thinly. Pay only once the free tier has shown you an active local pool, and only for the specific thing you established you were buying.

Writing a profile that does the filtering for you

The most common complaint in this category is volume of the wrong kind of attention, and a profile is the main tool for shaping that.

State the purpose. An app can be used for several things at once, and saying which one you are there for filters more effectively than any setting. It costs you the matches that were never going to work.
