How to Choose a Lube That Will Not Wreck Your Condom
Most lube guides rank products by feel. Feel is the least useful thing about a lubricant, because the two properties that decide whether it irritates you and whether your condom survives it are both invisible, and neither is on the front of the bottle.
The good news is that a UN-backed technical committee has already done the work. In 2012 the World Health Organization, UNFPA and FHI360 published an advisory note on personal lubricants written to tell procurement agencies which products were safe to buy in bulk for public health programmes. It is not marketing, it has no product to sell, and it sets numbers. This tutorial is how to shop against those numbers.
Step 1 — Learn the one number that matters: osmolality
Osmolality measures how concentrated a solution is compared with your own tissue. A lubricant that is far more concentrated than the cells it touches pulls water out of those cells. The tissue dries, the surface layer sheds, and you get exactly the micro-damage a lubricant was supposed to prevent.
The WHO advisory sets the limit plainly: procurement agencies should "try and limit osmolality to less than 1200 mOsm/kg".
Then it says the part that should change how you shop. In the committee's own words, most current commercial lubricants "have osmolalities in the 2000-6000 mOsm/ kg range" — that is, the typical product on the shelf is roughly two to five times over the limit the WHO recommends. This is not a fringe concern about obscure brands. It is the mainstream of the category.
The advisory is also clear that this is a solvable formulation problem, not a physical trade-off: "The formulation of low osmolal lubricants does not, however, present any significant technical challenges." Products that meet the limit exist. They are simply not the default.
Step 2 — Read the ingredients, because the number is rarely printed
Almost no consumer lubricant prints its osmolality. What it does print is an ingredient list, and the advisory tells you exactly what to do with it.
Osmolality in these products is driven by glycols, added as humectants. The advisory gives the thresholds:
- Glycerol (glycerin) should not exceed 9.9% mass fraction
- Propylene glycol should not exceed 8.3% mass fraction
- If both are used, total glycol content should stay below roughly 8.3% mass fraction
Percentages are almost never disclosed either — but ingredient lists are ordered by descending quantity, and that is enough to shop with. If glycerin or propylene glycol appears second or third, immediately after water, you are looking at a glycol-heavy formulation and the burden of proof is on the manufacturer. If glycols appear near the end of a long list, or not at all, the formulation is far more likely to sit near the limit.
Two more ingredient rules come straight from the same document:
- Nonoxynol-9. The advisory reports that research summaries find these spermicides have "significant irritant effects, and, overall, their use is not recommended". If a lubricant advertises spermicide, that is a reason to put it back.
- Polyquaternium-15. The advisory tells procurement agencies to "avoid lubricant formulations containing polyquaternium 15 specifically, and perhaps polyquaternary compounds in general" until the evidence is clearer.
It also notes that common preservatives — parabens, sorbates, phenoxyethanol, benzoic acid — "can cause irritation and sensitization in some individuals". That is not a reason to avoid preserved products, which is nearly all of them. It is a reason to suspect the preservative first if a lubricant you otherwise like stings.
Step 3 — Match pH to what you are actually doing
This is where most shopping advice quietly fails, because it assumes one lube fits every use. The advisory says it does not.
The numbers, quoted from the document: "The pH of the healthy vagina is normally in the range 3.8-4.5. The pH of the rectum is closer to neutral (pH 7)." From that it concludes: "Ideally therefore a vaginal lubricant should have a pH of about 4.5 and a rectal lubricant of about 5.5 to 7."
Why it matters vaginally is stated directly: "High vaginal pH can lead to an increase in the risk of bacterial vaginosis. High pH is also more supportive of HIV survival."
And then the sentence no product page will ever quote at you: "It is unfortunate that these optimum requirements cannot be bridged in a single lubricant."
There is no such thing as one correct lube. If you have both vaginal and anal sex, the honest answer is two bottles.
Step 4 — Match the lube to the condom material, not to the condom
Here is the trap. "Condom-safe" is not a property of a lubricant on its own; it is a property of the pairing. The advisory is blunt about the risk: "latex condoms rapidly lose strength if exposed to oil-based lubricants", and "using incorrect lubricants contributes significantly to increased rates of breakage and slippage".

The polyisoprene row is the one that catches people. Polyisoprene is sold as the latex-free option, and readers reasonably assume latex-free means the latex rules do not apply. The advisory says otherwise: other synthetic materials such as polyisoprene are "just as sensitive to oil-based lubricants as are latex condoms", and therefore "it is necessary to check very carefully the material used to make the condom before using an oil-based lubricant".
Polyurethane is the genuine exception — the advisory notes that almost any lubricant with proven human safety can be used with it.
On silicone: the advisory confirms silicone oil lubricants (polydimethylsiloxane) are compatible with natural rubber latex, and notes only that they cost more than water and glycol formulations. Silicone is not an oil in the condom-destroying sense, despite the name.
Step 5 — Patch-test silicone lube against your toys
You will read everywhere that silicone lubricant destroys silicone toys. We are not going to repeat it as fact, because we could not source it to a manufacturer or a standards body — and the WHO advisory, which is about condoms, does not address it at all.
What you can do costs nothing and settles it for the specific bottle and the specific toy you own:
- Pick the hidden spot. The base or underside of the toy, somewhere that never touches you.
- Apply a small amount of the lubricant and leave it for an hour.
- Wipe and feel. Tackiness, softening, cloudiness or a change in surface texture means do not pair them.
- Repeat per product. Silicone formulations differ enormously; passing with one bottle tells you nothing about the next.
Water-based lube sidesteps the question entirely, which is why it remains the default recommendation for silicone toys.
The shopping rule, in one line
Buy water-based with glycols low in the list for toys and general use; buy a pH-appropriate product for the specific act; and never let an oil-based product near latex or polyisoprene. If you want to go further, ask the manufacturer for the osmolality figure directly. The ones who formulated below 1200 mOsm/kg will tell you, because it took effort. The silence of the rest is its own answer.

Polyisoprene condoms — the usual latex-free option — are, in the WHO advisory's words, just as sensitive to oil-based lubricants as latex condoms are. Latex-free does not mean oil-safe. Check the material printed on the box, not the marketing.
Should I avoid lubricants containing spermicide?
The WHO advisory reports that research summaries find spermicidal additives, predominantly nonoxynol-9, have significant irritant effects and that overall their use is not recommended. It also advises avoiding polyquaternium-15 specifically. If you want spermicidal protection, discuss it with a clinician rather than picking it up as a lubricant feature.
