Almost every AI companion app has a free tier, and it is more useful than it looks. Unused tokens expire when the subscription ends. Refunds must be requested within 24 hours and are refused once more than 20 tokens are used.
• Replika (terms updated 30 March 2026): a Free Use programme with limited access, alongside paid plans billed monthly to annually through the app store you buy from. Sales are described as final, and partial months are not refunded.

So "free tier" can mean five messages or an open-ended limited plan. On a five-message tier, a week of free testing is not possible: use the messages to judge the writing, then take the shortest paid term and decide within the refund window.

How to work out your real monthly cost

The estimate that works is behavioural rather than arithmetic.

1. Use the free tier for as long as it lasts — ideally a week. Not an evening, because the interesting failure mode is drift over time rather than a bad first conversation; where the free tier is only a handful of messages, the shortest paid term does the same job.
2. Notice what you kept wanting and could not have. If it was images, the metered layer is your real cost centre. If it was just more messages, a flat subscription probably covers you.
3. Read what the subscription includes, specifically for the thing from step two.
4. Buy the smallest credit pack once, if credits are involved, and see how far it goes at your actual usage.

That sequence produces a real number for you. A review cannot, because the metered layer means cost is a function of behaviour rather than a property of the app.
