Most comparisons in this category pit an adult-first app against a wellness-first one, which makes them easy — the products are aiming at different things. This one is harder and more interesting, because Candy AI and Girlfriend GPT are both built for the same job.

That means the differences are in execution rather than intent, and execution is exactly what a feature table cannot capture.

What to compare when both apps do the same thing

Four things actually separate adult-first companion apps, and only one of them is usually advertised.

For Candy AI, its own terms of service (revised 22 September 2026, read 16 October 2026) answer three of the four: a subscription includes unlimited messaging plus a monthly token allowance disclosed at checkout, generally 100 tokens, for images and voice notes; anything beyond that is bought as tokens; and unused tokens expire when the subscription ends. On the fourth, the terms say a backup payment method you designate can be charged if the default fails, so remove cards you do not want used. Test both before committing

Both expose a free tier, and running them in parallel is the only comparison that transfers to your use. The free tiers are not the same size, though: Candy AI's terms cap a free user at about 5 messages, which is enough to judge the writing but not the memory, so the longer test on that side means the shortest paid term — its terms allow a refund request within 24 hours of payment, refused once more than 20 tokens are used.

Three things to watch specifically:

1. Does the persona hold? Have a genuinely long conversation and see whether the character survives it.
2. Does the memory work? Establish a detail early, come back on day four, and see whether it is still there.
3. What did you keep wanting? Whatever you reached for and could not have is your metered cost centre, and it tells you which app's pricing structure suits you.

The image question

Both generate images, and the useful distinction is not quality — it is consistency.

An app that renders a beautiful image of a different-looking person each time is worse for immersion than one that renders a slightly plainer image of the same companion every time. Consistency is what makes generated images work in a companion context, and it is straightforward to test on a free tier by generating several in a row and looking at them together.

Privacy applies equally

Adult-first apps hold adult-first conversation logs, which raises the stakes on the standard questions: retention period, whether conversations train models, and what account deletion actually removes.

Answer those from each privacy policy before the first long conversation rather than after. People who run the parallel test above tend to report the same three things, and they are worth knowing in advance so you recognise them.

The first-session impression does not survive. Both apps are good on day one. Whatever separates them shows up around day four, when the memory has accumulated enough to either hold together or contradict itself.
