- Two side-by-side copies of the scene — the player is treating a side-by-side file as a single flat image. Set the format to SBS.
- Everything looks flat but correctly shaped — the file is genuinely mono, or the player is in 2D mode.
- The image is squashed vertically or horizontally — you have SBS and TB confused. Switch the packing.
- The scene wraps too far around you — a 180 file is being played as 360, or the reverse.

Step 3 — The sideloaded player route

- Install a sideloading tool on the computer — SideQuest is the common choice — and use it to install the player.
- Launch it from Unknown Sources. Sideloaded apps do not appear in your normal app list. In the app library, change the filter from All to Unknown Sources, or you will conclude the install failed when it did not.

Step 4 — Local files, for when quality actually matters
Streaming is compressed twice: once by the encoder, once by whatever your connection can carry in real time. Local playback removes the second one.
- Download on a computer, not in the headset. You want the highest resolution the source offers.

- Check free storage first. High-bitrate VR files are large, and a 128 GB headset fills faster than people expect.
Step 5 — Fix comfort before you blame the content
Two adjustments change the experience more than any setting in the player.
- Set your IPD. The Quest 3 has a continuous adjustment. If the lens spacing does not match your eyes, everything is soft and you will get eye strain within minutes and blame the video.
- Get the strap height right. The sweet spot is small. If the display sits low, the top of the image blurs; people tighten the strap in response, which makes it worse.
